How to Plan an Amazing and Creative Wedding on a Small Budget

NUMBER OF GUESTS: Weddings on a budget are suited to small affairs, considering inviting 40 to 90 people at most for an intimate occasion that allows you to spend time with the people you cherish most in your life. The more people you invite, the more challenging it will be to spend time with everyone during the reception which lasts an average of four to five hours.
WEDDING PLANNER: $500.00 to $1,000.00.  The risk of planning a DIY wedding to save money is you will end up working and realize you have taken on more than you can possibly handle. Take the money you're saving in other areas and spend it on a wedding planner. Inquire if the planner offers day of wedding services which saves a bride on a budget money. Make sure you stay the bride and not the wedding planner.
VENUE: $0 to $2,000.  1. Consider a backyard wedding. Western North Carolina is host to a wide array of picturesque locations, but the great thing about a homespun wedding is your history with the location. When you look back at your wedding photos, you'll see a place that's meant something to you for a long time where you've lived many parts of your life. It's 100% yours, without the worry of sticking to a timeline and winding the reception up at a firm hour when you must be done, the evening lasts until the celebration really ends.
2. If it's a challenge to accommodate guests and parking at home, consider public parks which can be rented for special occasions. As an example, check out our real wedding feature in this post (the ceremony took place downtown in Pritchard Park).
3. If your heart is set on finding a public wedding venue, consider a little known gem in Black Mountain:In The Oaks. Through Montreat College, the property is commonly available for conferences, but it's also available to rent for weddings. Part of the National Registry of Historic Places, this charming estate built in the late 1800's is the perfect answers common problems couples worry about while planning their big day: parking isn't a worry, a natural shady landscape has space for your ceremony and reception. In case of rain, the estate's library works as a backup plan for the ceremony. To find out more, use the old fashioned way of calling the college to request more information. (important tip: the college gives a big discount for NC residents, $1,6000 vs. $3,600 for out of state couples)
4. If you have a rustic affair in mind, take a look at the dairy barn in Valle Crucis, North Carolina which rents for $1,100.00 for a full day and includes a large open lawn for the ceremony and historic red barn for the reception.
5. Marshall High Art Studios in Marshall, North Carolina (about 20 minutes from Asheville proper) is available to rent for weddings with ample indoor and outdoor space. To visualize what a wedding would look like here, check out this blog post from local wedding planner Shay Brown Events which features a wedding from Marshall High Studios. This venue is a blank canvas for a creative couple and rents for just $450.00 (wow). Rob Pulleyn, from the studios, informed me, "We have an auditorium which is frequently used for wedding and other events. It does require that you rent chairs and tables, for instance, but we can work with couples on the details. Some folks want to have the wedding ceremony on the island or in the audiorium. When it's rented for a wedding, it's for at least two days so you can decorate, get caterers in there, set up, etc."
6. Check out the rental of a private home for you wedding via the websites VRBO and Homeaway.
6. Check venues to see if their winter rates are more affordable.
ATTIRE: $250.00 to $1,500.00. 1. Check out local vintage, antique stores and small boutiques (like Ragtime, Honey Pot or the back section of the shop at Magnolia Beauregard's Anitiques and Minx Boutique, all in downtown Asheville) for classic options that won't feel regrettably dated in five years (Price range can vary from at little as $36.00 to $200+). Check out this blog post (July 2011) which features out of the box antique dress ideas for your wedding from Magnolia Beauregard's Antiques.
2. Well known wedding blog, www.oncewed.com, began as a website where soon to be brides bought consignment wedding dress. You'll find that part of the blog is still alive and kicking and it's easy to find options in the range of $125.00 to $1,000.00+.
3. Locally, Black Tie Affair, in the Biltmore Square Mall offers consignment wedding attire and Clothes Encounters on north Merrimon Avenue is another option.
PHOTOGRAPHY: $1,500 to $3,500.  With digital photography the norm and megapixels getting bigger and bigger, it's tempting to let your friend or relative volunteer to take your photos as their wedding gift. When you immediately see the image in digital photography, it's easy to think that digital makes things more certain, but photography is actually more complicated and requires a nuanced understanding of lighting and exposure that only professional photographers posses. At some point, every wedding presents lighting challenges, and a friend or relative may not be up to the challenge of solving that problem when they're put on the spot to capture a fleeting moment that will mean a great deal to you when it's captured in an artful way by a pro photographer. For these reasons, photography is one area I encourage you to allot more money to. For 5 hours of wedding coverage, expect to spend at $1,500 to $3,000+. When you narrow your choices down to your top picks, ask to review all the photos from a single wedding in an online photo gallery (request to review 500+ images) to see how they tell the entire story of the day. Evaluate their strong points, for example, is their strength portrait photography or photojournalism that captures genuine moments, and how does that match up with what you really want? Inquire about their hourly rate and consider hiring an excellent photographer for 2 to 4 hours, rather than a less talented photographer for 5 hours at a cheaper rate.Who doesn't love a great deal, but be cautious of photographers who promise a lot for less than the average photography cost, as this practice is usually unsustainable. Remember, won't pay for your vendor's services all at once, photographers often require a 50% deposit to reserve you date with the balance due closer to the wedding.
CATERING: $300.00 to $600.00.  Potlucks are a great southern tradition and signify community coming together, which is a great metaphor for a wedding and the perfect place to save money at your big occasion. Consider asking guests to bring lots of cold salads while you take care of the protein. You're not just another job to your friends and family, so the food will be made with love. This is one area which usually takes up a big chunk of the budget, but it can be a place to think outside the typical wedding box for the budget savy bride. Local DIY bride, Jesame McClellan, speaks from experience, advising brides, "Ask your guests to bring a covered dish, in lieu of a gift, which saves a ton of money. For our wedding, we bought beer (4 kegs), a whole pig to roast for the party and an extra large pot of homemade tamales. Let as many people as possible help out and pitch in. Turn your wedding into a community event. Ross (my husband), his mom, and three of our friends worked for three days to get the family farm ready for the event. At the end of the day we may not have had the most glamorous or detailed of weddings, but it was beautiful to us and full of meaning and heartfelt gestures. We went for quality not quantity and that is exactly what we got. So, don't worry over fussy details, high expectations are the death of serenity. Let your friends and family be the stars of the event!”
CAKE: $0 to $200.00.  You can also choose certain guests to contribute to a desert buffet table. Add smaller, 8 inch round, cakes from local bakeries and pastry chefs (choose your favorites from around town: Short Street Cakes, the French Broad Chocolate LoungeThe Well Bread Bakery andDovetail Cakery immediately come to mind as options). This will fill your table out and give you the best of both worlds.
FLOWERS (BOUQUET, Boutonniere AND TABLE CENTERPEICE): $300.00 to $900.00.  You'll find a variety of flower farms (for example Lady Luck Flower Farm in Leicester, NC) where couples buy seasonal blooms by the bucket for DIY flower arrangements. A note of caution; before the wedding you may feel that you can do it all yourself, but a big part of DIY is asking for help. Recruit 2 to 4 friends to tarrange your centerpieces and expect it to take twice as long as you anticipate when choosing your start time. Plan to have it completed at least 1 or 2 hour before the ceremony (wedding guests always arrive earlier than you imagine). To hold your arrangements, mason jars immediately come to mind for the budget conscious bride, we see them everywhere at wedding and for good reason: they're affordable and have the perfect visual personality for a homespun event. Another creative idea, if arranging centerpieces on the day of your wedding sounds less than fun, is to use collections of small, antique glass bottles as vases for single buds that you group closely together. You'll have lots of time when you don't have to worry about how the arrangement is coming together. For your wedding bouquet and boutonniere, I encourage you to spend more of your budget, the bouquet is an art you will find challenging without the professional skills of local florist. Remember, you don't want to work at your wedding. Inquire with local florist for their rates on just the bouquets and boutonnieres. DIY brides can also request consultations, for a fee, with local florists (for example, Flora Events) on how to do DIY flower arrangements and decor for their weddings.
DIY DECOR: $200.00 to $400.00. Online, type in DIY wedding decor and you'll find no end to your results. When choosing projects on a budget, look for those ideas that show the potential of ordinary objects to be transformed in unexpected ways, for example, garland made from tan coffee filters and white cupcake papers strung from tree to tree around your ceremony.
CHAIRS, TABLES, LINENS, TENTS: $500.00 to $1,000.00. I recently attending a wedding at a family farm where the ceremony took place in front of a barn and all the guest stood, and I never wondered for a second, where are the chairs? Don't buy everything your sold. If you're serious about saving money, consider a picnic style potluck and ask your guests to bring an old fashioned quilt from home for a picnic on the lawn. The quilts add charm, visual interest and color to the event and to your wedding photos. At the same time, it's likely some of your guests will necessitate the presence of tables and chairs. For good rates, check out Artful Shelter on River Road in Asheville and Rental Me This on Merrimon Ave. in Asheville
MUSIC: $600.00 to $1,000. Contact schools, for example The Asheville Music School in downtown Asheville, and considering hiring their best students to play during your ceremony. At the reception, you'll find a dj more affordable than a live band.

Affordable wedding ideas from Asheville Weddings provided by Asheville Celebrity DJs

http://ashevilleweddingdj.wix.com/ashevillecelebritydj

Affordable wedding ideas from Asheville Celebrity DJs. I came across this post on Asheville Indie Weddings blog on some affordable and unique wedding ideas.

Kiersa Holy, of Events by Kiersa, gave lot’s of advice, which Asheville Indie Weddings shares on their blog:

1.A new, historically renovated, green certified theatre, The Altamont, located in the heart of downtown Asheville, is available to rent for weddings.

2. City parks and county parks. For example, UNCA Botanical Gardens is available for ceremonies and receptions at a great rate.

3. Local restaurants, on their closed day, often rent their space for a flat fee. Local places to check: Avenue MFiores and Limones.

4. Local wine bars are a great option for wedding receptions.

5. Rent a private home for an event. Kiersa passed along two websites where you can research a broad range of mountain rental properties:www.homeaway.com or www.vrbo.com

6. Private homes are options for elegant and simple affairs. One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want to turn into a host, working at your own wedding! With that in mind, it’s a good idea to hire a wedding planner for weddings. Keep in mind, private homes aren’t set up for weddings, so a coordinator can help you understand surprising costs if you choose this route.

7. Check out local Bed and Breakfast options. Here are a few to begin with: Hawk and Ivy and Bella Luna Inn (connected to Black Eyed Susan Catering).

Kiersa also said that when planning a wedding, the first thing to do is to define your budget, number of guests and the ideal venue. Once these three elements are in harmony your have the best foundation to move forward.

Which Type of Wedding Venue is Right for You?

Asheville Weddings provided by Asheville Celebrity DJs is always searching for good ideas to help you and we found this great post from The Asheville Wedding Blog. We love to share creative ideas and give them full credit.

Which Type of Wedding Venue is Right for You?

If we had to pick just three wedding planning decisions that are highest in importance and difficulty, finding the dress, hiring the perfect wedding photographer, and choosing a wedding venue would instantly fall from our lips. But, arguably, the most challenging task from among those three is the last — researching, viewing, and finally booking just one wedding venue that fits your needs, budget, and what you envision for your big day. What complicates matters even further is when you have absolutely no idea which type of wedding venue you want or would be right for your upcoming celebration.
Often in the wedding world, the search for the wedding venue is presented as an easy choice and it always is made to appear that every bride knows exactly what kind of venue she wants. But this isn't true. Not every bride has been dreaming of her wedding day since she began playing with Barbies and not every bride can easily fit her style into a nicely wrapped box. So if you're starting out on your road to "I do" with not an inkling of an idea about what you want or need in a venue, don't think you're alone. We're here to help. We'll go ahead and say it: we don't have a magic answer for you because choosing your wedding venue is a very, very personal choice. However, we have put together a few statements for a few of the most popular wedding venue types that describe general characteristics of brides that might find themselves drawn to a venue of that style. If you find yourself nodding in agreement to most or all of the statements in a given set, then the corresponding venue is probably right for you! So without further ado, let's get to it.

    Hotel Wedding Venues

Hotel wedding venues were made for the glamorous brides of the world. You can't convince us otherwise, especially when they often feature floor-to-ceiling luxury, delectable in-house catering, and a staff of helpful, knowledgeable experts who really know how to pull of an event with style. Then, throw in the fact that many hotel venues feature a ballroom and various other facilities to host soirees of any size and we're more than convinced that hotels are the perfect backdrops for brides who want it all — beautiful surroundings (hotels, inns, & resorts often have gorgeous grounds, so there's non-stop pretty indoors and out), convenient guest accommodations, and rentals, experts, and stunning ceremony/reception spaces all in one place!
If the statements below speak to you, we'd bet a pretty penny that a hotel venue is just right for your glamorous, luxury-filled fête!
You might be a hotel bride if...
    • you love modern and/or glamorous style wedding decor.
    • you want catering done on-site and in-house.
    • you love the idea of having an all-inclusive event.
    • you want to have a wedding that lasts all weekend long.
    • you want to easily supply guests with accommodations.
    • you are having a really big wedding.
    • you have your heart set on having a top-notch, ritzy reception.
Country clubs are a close cousin to hotel wedding venues (minus the accommodations), so if you just can't seem to find a hotel that catches your eye, you can't go wrong with a magical celebration at a prestigious club! They often have the same special offers — on-site catering, personal coordinator, grand ballroom, etc. — and the rolling hills of the golf courses are spectacular for gorgeous outdoor photos, too.via

    Wedding Venues
Usually set out in wide-open, rural areas, barn wedding venues are loved by rustic brides for many reasons. For starters, the views are often amazing and the barn gives a celebration a more laid-back feel that many brides enjoy. On top of that, there are so many options to choose from — whether the bride-to-be swoons for historic, fully-restored barns or brand-spanking-new barns full of fabulous amenities, such as built-in bars, plenty of restrooms, chandeliers, etc. Similar in terms of style to barn venues, ranches and farms also make fabulous choices for brides who dream of rustic weddings and the idea of having a celebration tucked away in the quiet countryside!
So, if you're a gal who would rather throw on cowgirl boots rather than heels on any day of the week and who adores a backdrop that's a got some serious rustic flair, then check out this list below.
You might be a barn bride if...
    • you love rustic/country/southern style wedding decor.
    • you appreciate "off-the-beaten-path" and natural environments.
    • you are willing to do whatever is needed to prepare for the weather.
    • you don't mind maybe having to book rentals, such as extra bathrooms, heaters or A/C units, etc.
    Modern Wedding Venues
Brides come in many different packages — some brides can't imagine having a wedding day that lacks glamorous details while others feel sparkly decor is totally meant for someone else. And, either way, that's totally okay. A wedding day is all about honoring love and showing off the personality of the bride and groom. Modern wedding venues are one of our favorites because they can offer an interesting glimpse into the unique style of the couple. Like brides, they come in all different shapes and have many different styles! Whether a stunning art gallery in the middle of a bustling city or a converted cotton mill loft tucked away in an alley, these wedding venues are great for brides who love pretty-with-a-twist aesthetics, such as exposed brick walls or surrealist sculptures.
If you're the sort of bride who often finds herself on the hunt for originality and wedding details that feel like "a breath of fresh air," then the average, run-of-the-mill venue probably isn't right for you. But, if you're looking for a backdrop that shines with creativity and non-standard beauty, then modern wedding venues were made with you in mind!
You might be a modern bride if...
    • you love offbeat or "pretty with a twist" style wedding decor.
    • you love modern/urban/unique wedding decor.
    • you would rather spend a day in the city than a day in the country on most occasions.
    • you daydream about having wedding photos with amazing architectural backdrops.
    • you have your heart set on a more unique ceremony and reception setting.

    Estate Wedding Venues
Big, grand homes (often filled with antiques and vintage decor) set amongst miles and miles of vibrant green lawns, gorgeous gardens, and countless picturesque views, historic estate venues are truly beautiful places to tie the knot. In the south, estate venues often come in the form of elegant antebellum homes and former plantations — perfect for a southern affair that's less rustic and more regal. However, in New England and northern states, you're more likely to find castles and historic mansions rather than the white, columned houses typical of the south. Either way, estate wedding venues are ideal for brides who love history and times past as much as they love breathtaking outdoor scenery. And did we mention that they create an amazing atmosphere for many wedding day styles? With so many gorgeous indoor and outdoor spaces, there are plenty of ways to make your vision come to life with architectural details of the estate home and the natural beauty of the great outdoors all around it.
If you find yourself smiling, you should probably start booking estate tours today!
You might be a historic estate bride if...
    • you love luxurious, glamorous style wedding decor.
    • you have your heart set on having pretty indoor AND outdoor landscapes at your wedding.
    • you adore antiques and vintage homes.
    • you appreciate history.
    • you want access to indoor comforts (bathrooms, bridal suite, etc.) and outdoor backdrops.
    Backyard Wedding Venues
There are definitely many ways you can add touches of personality to your wedding day, but one of our personal favorites for really showing off your uniqueness is by having your day at a truly one-of-a-kind place — your (or a friend or family member's) very own backyard. Great for setting a tone that's intimate and all about sharing really sweet, genuine memories with your friends and family, backyard weddings are perfect for brides who want their weddings to a be laid-back extension of themselves. When you host your big day at your home, you literally get the chance to open your doors and welcome your guests into your lives, into your love, and into your coming together. Plus, what could be more relaxing and special than getting ready in your own bedroom and creating special moments in a place where you can relive the memories without making a move?
If you're looking for a causal, "we're-all-family-here" style wedding day, then you truly cannot have your day at a better spot than in your own backyard. If you think a magical, at-home wedding might be just the thing for you, browse the list we've put together below. Like we said in the intro, if you find yourself nodding your head in agreement with pretty much every item, then a cozy backyard celebration could be calling your name!
You might be a backyard bride if...
    • you're dying to DIY.
    • you love the idea of having an intimate, family-oriented wedding day.
    • you are having a small wedding.
    • you are more of a laid-back, casual bride.
    • you love the outdoors.
    • you are okay with having to tent/book rentals for your celebration.
    • you are willing to do whatever is needed to prepare for the weather.
Okay, so we're dying to know — which set of statements really made your heart go pitter-patter? Are you a glamour girl who is head over heels for hotel wedding venues? A rustic gal who fawns for barn weddings? A casual backyard wedding lover? Tell us below, and feel free to share your own experience choosing a wedding venue type that was right for you!
